I’ve written it before and I will write it again: Che Meraviglia!

Italian market Uncle Giuseppe’s celebrated its grand opening on Friday at its new Morris Plains location, though it had been officially open for a few days prior. It now occupies the 42,000-square-foot building that was once a ShopRite in the Briarcliff Commons shopping mall on Route 10. The store is just the second in the state after the Ramsey location.

Company president Philip Del Prete and Morris Plains mayor Jeff Card were on hand to greet customers and other attendees of the ceremony. It wasn’t long before the place became packed. I’m not surprised.

The new store is a great addition to Morris County. Italian blood runs strong through the area, as it does for most of the state, but there aren’t any Italian markets.

I grew up in Morristown and can attest to the lack of Italian markets. The closest thing we had was Verrilli’s Bakery where my grandmother would get pizza shells and Don Pepino sauce so we could make our own pizzas. Otherwise, the bulk of what existed were delis, restaurants, and bakeries. But, so far as I know, nothing like Uncle Giuseppe’s has ever been seen in Morris County.

It’s a cornucopia of Italian specialties and ingredients. Fresh ravioli runs off a conveyor belt as passersby watch. Dried meats hang from the ceiling. And there is enough cheese to act as an Italian St. Patrick to draw all the mice out of New Jersey. Bread baked fresh daily and enough cakes, cookies, and cannolis to make Augustus Gloop blush. All of your needs in one place. Che delizioso!
