General Mills is voluntarily recalling various types of 2lb, 5lb, and 10lb Gold Medal brand flours due to the possible presence of Salmonella Infantis. The affected products were sold nationwide and have a “better if used by” date of March 27, 2024, and March 28, 2024. Being that flour is an ingredient most people use slowly, it is likely that many people still have from March.
This recall is particularly troubling because flour is such a basic staple ingredient and Gold Medal is among the most popular flour brands. It’s anyone’s guess as to how many households will be affected by the recall, but I suspect it’s a high number.
You also don’t want to mess with Salmonella Infantis, a nasty little bug that causes nausea, diarrhea, fever and abdominal pains after between six hours and six days after infection and can last between four to seven days. Thankfully, as with most strains of Salmonella, it is killed in the baking process, so it is only the raw flour one needs to worry about, and nobody should be eating raw flour to begin with. The problem has more to do with how flour tends to get everywhere when you’re working with it, so the bacteria could easily spread to countertops, cabinet doors, up your nose, etc.
So, you’ll want to throw out your flour if it matches the following product descriptions:
